SALT LAKE CITY - Tim Esmay, who has been the head baseball coach at the University of Utah since 1997, has been named assistant coach at Arizona State University, his alma mater.
Esmay, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., was an infielder (1986-87) and assistant coach (1988-90, 94) under legendary ASU head coach Jim Brock. He rejoins the Sun Devil baseball program after spending the last eight years as the head coach at Utah.
Esmay returns to ASU after posting a 213-235-1 record at Utah. He also coached at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix for two years (1992-93) and was an assistant at Grand Canyon University (1995) and Utah (1996) before taking over the head job in 1997. In his first season, Esmay directed to the Utes to a 36-21-1 record and the WAC Northern Division title with a 22-8 mark.
"I've enjoyed my nine years at the University of Utah," Esmay said. "I'll be eternally grateful that the administration took the chance on a 31-year-old head coach, and allowed me to grow and learn. I would hope that the athletes that I coached at Utah would feel as strongly about their alma mater as I do. With that said, I will always have a place in my heart set aside for the Utes."
Utah assistant A.D. Pete Oliszczak will begin a national search for Esmay's replacement immediately.
