SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman Chelsea Card scored in the 80th minute to lift No. 24 Utah past Gonzaga 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field. Kim Lloyd, another newcomer, also scored a first-half goal in the Utes' 2004 home opener.
Utah (1-1-0) dominated the game, outshooting the Bulldogs 20-6 and running up a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Utes registered eight shots on goal, forcing Gonzaga keeper Ashley Haugen to make six saves. Gonzaga (1-1-0) had three shots on goal with Ashley Mason making two saves for her first win of the season.
Lloyd, a junior transfer from UC Irvine, scored the first goal of the game at the 21:04 mark. Lauren Field slipped a pass to Lloyd after being fed by Tasia Duarte.
Rachael Manning evened the game at 1-1 in the 75th minute, putting the ball through the lower left corner of the frame after Mason was drawn out during a furious sequence in the box.
Chelsea Card then scored the game-winner, firing a shot past Haugen on the lower right side at the 80:56 mark. Feigt was credited with the assist after crossing the ball nicely from left to right.
The Utes host their first-ever Utah Fall Classic next Friday-Sunday at Ute Field. Weber State plays Oregon in Friday's first game at 2:00 p.m., followed by Utah vs. San Francisco at 4:00 p.m.
