Four More Utes Taken In Major League Draft

SALT LAKE CITY--Four players with Ute ties were taken in the 2004 Major League Draft on Tuesday. Current Utes Clay Westmoreland and Doug Mackay, along with signees Troy Grundy and Steven Hirschfeld were all drafted. The four combined with Matt Ciaramella, who was drafted on Monday in the 13th round by the Boston Red Sox, bumps Utah's total to five players taken overall.
Mackay, a junior, was selected in the 22nd round by the San Francisco Giants organization. The right-handed hurler struck out 88 batters in 91.1 innings of work this year. He primarily worked as a starter for Utah.
Hirschfeld, a 6-5 pitcher out of Moab, Utah, was drafted in the 29th round by the Montreal Expos. He went 7-2 with a 2.60 ERA as a junior and had 67 strikeouts en route to being named his team's MVP. He earned all-state honors as a junior and as a senior.
In the 33rd round, the reigning national champion Florida Marlins selected Westmoreland. The junior led Utah in ERA and had nine saves this season, which is a new Ute single-season record.
The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Grundy in the 42nd round. Grundy, a 6-1 pitcher from Carbon High School, has been named first-team all-region and first-team all-state the past three seasons. He averaged nine or more strikeouts per game as a sophomore and junior. He was also named American Legion Outstanding Pitcher during the state tournament in 2003.
