Volleyball Ends Regular Season On a High Note

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 19-ranked University of Utah volleyball team took care of business tonight, returning to the win column with a win over Eastern Washington, 3-0. Now, the Utes await to see if they will get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Game scores were 30-25, 30-21 and 30-25. The Utes improve to 24-6 overall while the Eagles fall to 20-10.
The NCAA tournament bracket will be announced tomorrow afternoon live on ESPNews at 4:45 p.m.
"It's always nice for the seniors to get a win on senior night," head coach Beth Launiere said after bagging career win No. 299. "The whole team came out tonight and played hard to get this win for the seniors.
"We played with more heart and desire than we have in the past few matches."
Utah got off to a slow start in each game and saw its hitting improve as the match went on. The Utes hit a meager .094 (15 kills, 10 errors and 53 attacks) in game one. But, they rallied to hit .211 (14-6-38) in game two and a match-best .333 (19-5-42) in the final frame. The visitors never hit better than .200 in a game for the match, averaging .096 for the match.
The Utes hit .203 over the three games and were led by Lyndsey Henderson. She had a match-high 12 kills. But it was the Toone sisters who were the most efficient. Amie Toone hit .636 (8-1-11) while Emillie was a perfect 4-0-4 (1.000) for the night.
Kelsie Kartchner and Tracy Neumeier set the attack as both racked up 19 assists. Connie Dangerfield, who became the single-season record holder for digs with 458 this year, led all players with 12 digs.Henderson tied with EWU's Ashley Jensen for the most blocks this evening. Both had six.
Five seniors donned the Crimson and White for their final home match this evening. Liana Bortoto, Katrena Ellett, Kartchner, Henderson and Neumeier will have used all of their college eligibility when the 2004 campaign ends.
The Utes got off to a tremendously slow start as the Eagles racked up a 7-2 lead in game one, hitting a swift .400 at that point (to Utah's -.231). However, the Utes clawed back into it and took its first lead in game one when Amie Toone smashed home a kill to make it 17-16. Utah's lead slowly built to five-points, 29-24, before it finished off with the 30-25 win.
Utah got off to slow starts in both games two and three as well. But, it wasn't as slow as in the first stanza. The rivals went back in fourth in both games with Utah using a 6-2 run in game two to take a 13-point lead.
Control of game three belonged to Eastern Washington until a hitting error gave the home team a 22-21 lead. It then rattled off six points to EWU's one and owned a 28-22 lead. The match ended with senior Katrena Ellett smashing down the match-winning kill on the slide.
The Eagles were led by Ashley Jensen's nine kills while Christina Albers' 28 assists led everyone.
