FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The accolades keep rolling in for the 2004 University of Utah volleyball team.
On the heels of its first Mountain West Conference regular season championship, four spikers and head coach Beth Launiere won postseason honors tonight, the eve before the conference tournament here in Fort Collins, Colo.
Launiere grabbed the Coach of the Year honor after leading her team to a share of the MWC regular season championship with a 13-1 slate. The program tallied its ninth straight 20-win season, going 22-3 overall.
Lyndsey Henderson, Shelly Sommerfeldt and Kelsie Kartchner were tabbed all-conference while sophomore Connie Dangerfield won Libero of the Year accolades.
Dangerfield stepped in as libero and took ownership of her role, averaging a league-high 4.28 digs per game. She tallied a pair of 20-dig outings (versus Colorado State and Wyoming) and had more than 15 digs in nine of the league matches. She also averaged 0.24 aces per game, bagging a season-high three against Air Force.
Henderson, a middle blocker, has been one of the team's top offensive threats in conference play. The Orem native led the Utes with 3.94 kills, 0.35 aces and 1.92 blocks per game, and hit a team-best .389. She led the conference in kills-per-game in league play while her blocks and aces-per-game averages were second. Her hitting ranked third. She was named MWC's Player of the Week for helping Utah to an upset win over Colorado State and over Wyoming.
Sommerfeldt averaged 3.15 kills against MWC rivals and hit .228 averaging 1.21 digs per game. The outside hitter had double-digit kills in eight conference tilts this year, including a season-best 20 against Wyoming.
Kartchner has been instrumental in running Utah's 6-2 offense. Dueling as a setter and outside hitter, she did a little bit of everything in helping Utah to its 13-1 league record. She averaged 6.00 assists, 2.36 kills, 1.98 digs and hit .248. Kartchner won MWC Player of the Week for back-to-back doubles against San Diego State and UNLV and also had a triple-double (12k-17a-13d) against Wyoming. In all, she had five double-doubles in league action to go along with her triple-double.
