Utah Volleyball Tops Lobos In Four

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball squad overcame a sluggish start to win its second straight volleyball match here tonight, topping Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico, 3-1.
The conference win came on score of 32-34, 30-18, 30-23 and 30-17. With the win, the Utes improve to 17-3 on the year and are still a perfect 9-0 in conference tilts. New Mexico stumbles to 7-14 overall and owns a 1-9 mark in the Mountain West.
"New Mexico came out very aggressive to start the match," commented head coach Beth Launiere. "UNM outworked us in game one. The Lobos run a fast offense and once we adjusted the timing of our block, we were able turn things around for us.
"When it was all said and done, it was a good match for us."
Utah had to bounce back from an extra-point game-one loss to the visitors, and did so by hitting a match-best .414 in the second frame. The Utes racked up 15 kills and three errors on 29 attempts in that game. Moreover, the Utes didn't allow UNM to hit better than .062 in the final three games. New Mexico hit a match-high .184 (17-8-49) in the first game.
It was another stellar defensive match for the Utes, who held their rivals to a .089 hitting percentage for the match. Utah forced the Lobos into 34 hitting errors and outblocked its rivals, 14.0-6.5. New Mexico racked up an amazing 22 team blocks on this same Utah team in the last meeting.
Amie Toone's seven blocks led the way and was trailed by Kelsie Kartchner with five and Lyndsey Henderson with four.
However, Henderson also stood out on the offensive side. The middle blocker led the way with 23.5 points. Those points came on 15 kills, a career-high six services aces and her four blocks (three of them assists). The six service aces was one shy of the four-game record at Utah. Henderson hit a swift .560 for match, tallying only one error to go along with her 15 kills and 25 swings.
Also chipping in on offense was Danielle Leichliter with a season-high15 kills and Kartchner with nine.
The Ute attack centered around Kartchner who tallied a team-best 28 assists while Tracy Neumeier posted 19 assists to go along with her two aces.
Nicole Ryan and Samie Weber led the offense for UNM. Both had 11 kills. Monica Meihack had a game-high 24 assists. Defensively, Weber led the team with six blocks and Adah Burke had a game-high 21 digs.
The Utes return to action tomorrow night to host Air Force Academy. Match time at Crimson Court is set for 7 p.m.
