SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg has completed his coaching staff in preparation for the 2005 season. Joining the Ute baseball team as assistant coaches will be Todd Delnoce and Bill Groves. Both of the assistant coaches are joining the Ute coaching staff for the second time.
Delnoce, who will serve as Utah's hitting instructor, was an assistant coach with the Utes from 1995-2001. He served as an assistant coach at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. from 2001-2003. Delnoce has been a groundskeeper at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City for the past year.
During his six seasons with Utah, Delnoce helped the Utes set six school records at the plate. Utah won a Western Athletic Conference Northern Division Championship in 1997 with Delnoce on the coaching staff. His Ute hitters were ranked in the top 10 nationally in batting average, doubles, home runs, runs per game and slugging that season.
Utah finished the season with a team batting average of .300 or better in five of the six seasons Delnoce was the Ute hitting instructor. Delnoce also served as third-base coach during his first stint with Utah. In addition to his on-field duties, he monitored the academic progress of the student-athletes, organized community service projects, coordinated hitting camps, assisted with recruiting, scheduling, game operations and field maintenance.
Delnoce earned his bachelor's degree in social work from Arizona State University in 1994. He served as team captain for the Sun Devils in 1994. Delnoce was the starting second baseman for ASU in both 1993 and 1994, when the team took part in the College World Series.
Groves is beginning his 20th season of collegiate coaching and will serve as a volunteer coach for Utah. He was an assistant with the Ute baseball program during the 1981 and 1982 seasons.
Groves has been the head baseball coach at Salt Lake Community College for the past seven seasons. In that time, he compiled 208 victories, a conference title, two conference runner-up finishes. Groves led SLCC to a No. 19 national ranking at one point and also earned regional coach of the year honors in 2002.
Prior to his time at SLCC, Groves was an operations manager at the Delta Center and Franklin Covey Field from 1993-96. He was an assistant baseball coach at Brigham Young University from 1989-93 and served as the head baseball coach at Southern Utah from 1983-89. As the head coach at Southern Utah, Groves earned 122 wins, led the Thunderbirds to a conference title and finished as the second-winningest coach in school history.
During his career, Groves has coached 59 all-conference players, two All-America selections, six Academic All-America honorees and has seen 12 of his players drafted.
Groves is a 1983 graduate of Utah. He also holds a master's degree from BYU.
