SALT LAKE CITY --- The Fighting Irish lived up to their name as Notre Dame fought off the No. 14-ranked University of Utah volleyball team here tonight, 3-0.
Utah, which hasn't lost a home match since September of 2003, drops its first home tilt on the season.
Game scores from tonight's match were 26-30, 24-30 and 25-30. Utah falls to 15-3 overall while Notre Dame improves on the season to 10-5.
"Notre Dame came in tonight well prepared and very focused," head coach Beth Launiere said. "I thought we were ready for tonight, but obviously not.
"Notre Dame played a solid volleyball match. There wasn't a lot of things that it didn't do well tonight and that's what put a lot pressure on our team - it made us scramble."
The Fighting Irish rallied around six service aces and hit .231 (50 kills, 19 errors and 134 attempts) for the match. Adrianna Stasiuk led the way hitting an incredible .567 for the night. She tallied 18 kills on 30 attempts and only chalked up one error.
The Utes, on the flip side, hit .169 as the UND defense forced Utah into 23 hitting errors and outblocked the home team, 10.0-8.0. Leading the way was Carolyn Cooper,tallying six blocks for the Irish. Lyndsey Henderson's five blocks paced the Utes.
Leading the attack for Utah was Liana Bortoto and Henderson. Each posted 10 kills for the evening. Kelsie Kartchner dished out 23 assists and Connie Dangerfield dug a match-best 23 balls.
Ashley Tarutis led the visitors with a match-best 31 assists and Meg Henican's 10 digs led the Irish as well.
The Utes return to Crimson Court this Saturday to host conference rival Brigham Young. Match time for this weekends tussle is set for 1 p.m., in a rare matinee.
