SALT LAKE CITY - Amanda Sanchez and Kim Lloyd both scored goals and Utah's defense allowed only three shots on goal at the Utes defeated Utah Valley State College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field.
Utah (9-4-2) dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Wolverines 17-4 and piling up a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Amberlee Nelson, who played the first 86:39 of the game for UVSC (4-9-2), saved five of the Utes' seven shots on goal to keep her team in the game.
The Utes scored on their third corner in the first 12 and half minutes. Erin Pruitt, one of five Utes recognized before the game on Senior Day, sent a corner kick in from the right side. Tracy Stratton Garner tipped it off her head to Sanchez, a freshman from Sacramento, Calif., who one-touched it into the back of the net.
Utah scored its second goal 14:52 out of halftime. Michelle Deatherage sent a pass in from the top of the box on the right side to Lloyd, who was waiting in front of the net. Lloyd punched it in from five yards out.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Mason, who has been fighting the flu the last three days, played the first half before being pulled. Senior Glennis Donnelly, who shutout Air Force on Thursday night, played the second half.
Robyn Rasmussen scored on Donnelly in the 70th minute to make it a one-goal game. Rasmussen sent in a cross from the right side that Donnelly played by could not hold onto. The ball deflected off her hands for the score. Donnelly also made a point-blank save on a shot by Carolyn Theurer in the 84th minute to preserve the win.
