SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah baseball coach Tim Esmay today announced the hiring of Bryan Conger, who has extensive coaching experience at the Division II, junior and community college levels, as the Ute pitching coach.
"I had a strong list of candidates, but I felt like Bryan's experience and success set him apart from the others," Esmay said. "We're very excited to bring him into the program. He's a proven winner everywhere he's been."
For the past year, Conger has served as the head coach at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan., where he set the school record for most wins by a first-year coach. His team placed second in the '03 Jayhawk Conference Tournament and captured the school's first-ever postseason victories. His pitching staff set school records for ERA, strikeouts, saves and appearances, and he had two all-conference pitching selections.
From 2000-02, Conger served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo. During his tenure there, the team won back-to-back conference championships, made the school's first-ever Junior College World Series appearance, earned a national ranking for the first time in the history of the program and set the school record for wins.
Conger's pitching staff at Lamar also enjoyed great success, setting school records for ERA, strikeouts, saves, shutouts and appearances. He also had four pitchers rank in the top 20 nationally in strikeouts. Meanwhile, four of his pitchers were drafted, five signed with Division I programs and he produced six all-region selections.
Prior to his work at Lamar, Conger served as the pitching coach at his alma mater, Tarleton State University. During his first season at Tarleton, the team advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional, the school's first-ever postseason berth. The following year, the team won the Lone Star Conference South Division crown.
Under his tutelage, Tarleton produced seven conference pitcher of the week awards, five all-conference picks, three all-region honorees, the conference Freshman of the Year and the conference Pitcher of the Year. In addition, the pitching staff set the school record for strikeouts in a season, set the conference record for strikeouts in a game, ranked third nationally in strikeouts per game (individual, 1999), and had two individual pitchers ranked in the Top 25 in the country in ERA.
Conger earned a bachelor's degree in speech communication from Tarleton in 1999, returning to his alma mater after spending two years as a professional baseball player with Pine Bluff in the Texas-Louisiana League.
During his college career, he was named Most Valuable Pitcher in 1995 and was his team's Comeback Player of the Year in '94.
