PROVO, Utah - The Ute baseball pitching staff combined for 10 walks and Utah dropped its fifth straight game tonight, falling at Brigham Young 17-8 in Provo. With the loss, Utah falls to 19-25 overall and 6-15 in Mountain West Conference play.

Sophomore Doug Mackay suffered the loss on the mound, throwing two innings and giving up nine runs, six of which were earned, on seven hits. He also walked three batters.

Junior Sean Overholt pitched four innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. He walked five batters.

Juniors Ryan Breska and Kevin Carver each pitched one inning and walked one batter apiece.

Utah got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first on a two-run homer by junior Mike Westfall, his eighth on the season.

The Cougars then took advantage of Utah's troubles on the mound, scoring four runs in the first and five runs in both the second and third innings, jumping out to a 14-2 lead.

After 2 1/2 scoreless innings, BYU added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

The Utes came back in the top of the seventh when freshman Tyler Kmetko doubled to center field, driving in one run, and senior Mike Basham hit a one-run single. Junior Jared Pena then smacked a three-run long ball to make it 15-7.

The Cougars answered with two runs in the seventh, one on a fielding error and the other on an RBI-single.

Utah managed one more run in the ninth when junior Cort Wilson homered to left field.

Pena finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. He was the only Ute with a multi-hit game.

Westfall was 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI, while Wilson was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one driven in.
