PROVO, Utah - Brigham Young rattled off 19 hits en route to a 16-5 win over Utah at Miller Field tonight. With the loss, the Utes fall to 19-26 overall and 6-16 in Mountain West Conference play. It was Utah's sixth straight defeat.
Sophomore Clay Westmoreland fell to 4-5 on the season on the mound. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs, six of which were earned, on 10 hits. He struck out two batters and walked five.
The Cougars got on the board early, with the second batter in the first inning knocking a solo home run to right field. They scored another run later in the inning on an RBI-single. Then, in the second, BYU scored two runs, both on base hits, to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
The Utes got on the board in the top of the fourth when senior Wick Udy cracked a solo homer, his second of the season, over the right field fence.
BYU then scored three more in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The first two came on what would have been a double by Ranger Wiens, who reached second base. However, at one point, Wiens passed the runner in front of him and was called out. The Cougars' final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly.
Utah answered in the fifth with one run on three consecutive singles, making it 7-2.
The Cougars added another run in the sixth on a one-run single.
Utah cut the BYU lead to four in the seventh, scoring two runs, one on an RBI-double by freshman Ryan Khoury and the other on a sacrifice fly by junior Jared Pena.
BYU opened the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer and went on to get five more hits, including two-run long ball, to jump out to a 14-4 lead.
The Cougars added two more runs in the eighth, one on an error and the other on a sacrifice fly.
The Utes managed one more run in the bottom of the ninth when Matt Anderson drove in junior Cort Wilson on a fielder's choice.
Khoury went 2-for-3 with two runs and one driven in, while Pena was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
