Ute Baseball Team Blows Past Air Force 12-4

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Utah baseball team scored six runs off three home runs in the third inning en route to a 12-4 win over Air Force in snowy Colorado Springs, Colo., today. With the win, the Utes improve to 14-16 overall and 4-7 in the Mountain West Conference.
Sophomore Doug Mackay (3-2) got the win, throwing eight complete innings. He gave up two runs on nine hits while striking out six.
Sophomore Matt Ciaramella led a group of five Utes with multi-hit games, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three driven in. Senior Mike Basham was also 3-for-5, scoring one run and driving in two others.
Junior Jared Pena was 2-for-5 with one run and three RBI, while sophomore Brett Sundberg was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Senior Wick Udy was 2-for-5 on the day.
The Falcons scored first in the bottom of the first on an RBI single. It was their only lead of the day.
Utah tied it up in the top of the second when Ciaramella double to center field and was brought home on a Basham double.
The Utes then came alive in the third, first on a Pena solo homer. A few batters later, Ciaramella knocked one out with two on base, scoring three runs. After a junior Mike Westfall base hit, Sundberg homered to center field, driving in two more runs.
The Falcons managed another run in the bottom of the third, bringing the score to 7-2.
After a scoreless fourth, Utah added to its lead in the fifth when Pena doubled with the bases loaded. Freshman Ryan Khoury then hit a sacrifice fly, bringing freshman Matt Anderson home for the third run of the inning.
Utah moved its lead to 11-2 in the sixth when Basham followed a Ciaramella double with a one-run single.
The Utes scored their final run of the game in the top of the eighth when senior Jake Jordison knocked a solo homer to right field.
Air Force brought home two more runs in the bottom of the ninth on three base hits and a balk.
UP NEXT:
Weather permitting, the Utes and Falcons will close out the series at 1 p.m. tomorrow, April 6.
