SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team edged past Southern Utah 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Ute Field this afternoon.
Freshman Derek Larsen (3-2) earned the win, throwing one inning with no hits and one strikeout.
Sophomore Brady Martinez inched closer to the Ute season and career saves records, notching his seventh save of the season. He pitched the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out two.
Junior Sean Overholt started on the mound for the Utes, pitching four innings and giving up two runs on six hits. He struck out five batters.
After two scoreless innings, the Thunderbirds got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI-triple.
The Utes answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third when sophomore T.R. Gourley stole home.
Southern Utah took back the lead in the fourth on a one-run single.
In the bottom of the fifth, junior Jared Pena doubled, bringing home the tying run. Khoury then followed with an RBI-single for the winning run.
Khoury went 3-for-3 on the game with one RBI, while junior Mike Westfall was 2-for-3.
