SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team dropped the final game in the series vs. UNLV 13-5 this afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. The Utes fall to 17-18 overall and 5-9 in Mountain West Conference play.

The Rebels led throughout the game, scoring two runs in the first and another in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Matt Anderson tripled down the left field line in the bottom of the third and came home on the following play when senior Mike Basham grounded out to the shortstop.

UNLV broke away with five unanswered runs in the fourth. The Rebels added to their lead with one run in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh for a 13-1 lead.

The Utes tried to mount a comeback in the eighth, scoring four runs on back-to-back walks, back-to-back base hits, another walk, a hit batsman and a single. Unfortunately, Utah left three men stranded that inning.

After sophomore Brady Martinez retired three consecutive batters in the top of the ninth, sophomore Matt Ciaramella singled to right field in the bottom of the ninth, but he and junior Nate Schlieman, who had reached on a base on balls, was left on base.

Ciaramella finished the day 3-for-3 with one run scored and one driven in. He also walked twice.

Freshman Ryan Khoury was also 3-for-3, while junior Mike Westfall was 2-for-5.

Junior Sean Overholt took the loss, falling to 0-5 on the season. He threw three innings, giving up five runs on six hits. He struck out two, walked three and hit two batters.

Martinez pitched well in relief, giving up one hit in two innings, while striking out three.

Utah host San Diego State for a three-game series next Thursday-Saturday, April 17-19, at Franklin Covey Field. All three games start at noon.
