SALT LAKE CITY - Aided by a pair of two-run homers, the Utah baseball team opened the second half of its conference season with a 7-2 win over San Diego State at Franklin Covey this afternoon.
With the win, the Utes move to 18-18 overall and 6-9 in Mountain West Conference play. The Aztecs drop to 16-23 overall and 9-7 in the MWC.
Sophomore hurler Clay Westmoreland (4-3) pitched the entire game, giving up two runs on eight hits. He struck out six.
San Diego State scored first in the top of the second on a one-run single to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Utes took the lead for good, scoring two runs on a double by junior Mike Westfall.
Utah added to that lead in the fifth on an RBI-single by junior Jared Pena and a two-run homer, the first of the season, by senior Wick Udy.
In the top of the seventh, the Aztecs scored on a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 5-2.
The Utes scored two more in the eighth, this time on a Westfall two-run home run.
Westfall finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. Pena went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
