SALT LAKE CITY - Aided by a huge five-run seventh inning, the Utah baseball team defeated No. 21 UNLV 7-2 this afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. With the win, the Utes improve to 17-17 overall and 5-8 in Mountain West Conference play.

Utah scored in the first inning when sophomore Matt Ciaramella singled through the left side, bringing home senior Wick Udy, who had himself doubled.

The Rebels tied things up in the top of the third, but the Utes took the lead right back on a Ciaramella RBI-single in the bottom of the third.

After 3 1/2 scoreless innings, Utah came alive in the seventh when Ciaramella doubled to left center, again plating Udy. Junior Mike Westfall then singled up the middle, bringing Ciaramella home.

On the next play, junior Cort Wilson cracked a two-run homer, making it 6-1. But the Utes weren't done.

Freshman Matt Anderson had a base hit, then advanced to second on a hit and run by senior Mike Basham. When junior Jared Pena singled up the middle, Anderson scored Utah's seventh and final run of the game.

UNLV scored one more run in the top of the eighth on an RBI-double.

Ciaramella finished the day 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. He also stole two bases. Anderson was 3-for-5, while Westfall went 2-for-3.

Sophomore Doug Mackay (4-2) got the win, pitching seven innings. He gave up two runs on five hits.

Freshman Jason Price threw two innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out three.
