SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 13 University of Utah women's volleyball team opened the 2002 season with a three-game sweep of New Hampshire, 30-26, 30-24, 30-23, on Friday, Aug. 30, in the first day of the Utah Classic at Crimson Court.
Junior Kim Turner finished with a double-double (10 kills and 10 digs), while senior Sylva Strzinkova racked up 15 kills and seven digs. Turner hit for .500, and sophomore Sabine Schulz, who finished with five kills, hit for .444. Sophomore Kelsie Kartchner notched 29 assists in the match and senior Brenda Beal had a team-high four blocks.
For the Wildcats, Alyson Coler had 10 kills. Jen Williams had 11 digs and Sasha Scott had 10. Erin Ludwig posted 26 assists. New Hampshire hit for .024 in the match.
"I'm really pleased with our performance tonight," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "Passing was my number one concern heading into the match, and we passed really well, so that was encouraging. Our offense was out of whack -- Sylva had 43 attack attempts, while Kim only had 16 -- but we have a lot in place to improve upon. We have the talent, we just need to be it all together.
"Kim continues to amaze me," Launiere continued. "She played a little on the left side tonight and pounded away. Anything we give her, she figures out."
UP NEXT: The Utes face Murray State at noon tomorrow, Aug. 31, in day two of the Utah Classic. At 7:00 p.m., Utah takes on No. 12 Pacific. "We have to beat Murray State first and they gave Pacific a tough time tonight," Launiere said.
