SALT LAKE CITY--The University of Utah baseball team has signed Utah prep standout Jason Price and Arizona prep standout Tyler Kmetko to letters of intent. Price, a left-handed pitcher, was named to the 2002 and 2001 5A all-state first teams by both the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune. During his senior season at Copper Hills High School, Price posted a 5-0 record with a 1.03 ERA and 87 strikeouts. The Utah native was named to the 2002 5A high school all-star team and was voted team MVP.
While at Copper Hills, Price threw three no hitters and recorded six shutouts. He compiled a career ERA of 1.62 with 208 strikeouts, and recorded only one loss (16-1) during his three letter years.
"The coaching staff is excited to get a quality left-handed pitcher like Jason in our program," said head coach Tim Esmay.
Kmetko, of Phoenix, Ariz. (Brophy College Prep High School), was named honorable mention all-state and first team all-region in 2002. He received the 2002 Coaches' Award for Best Defensive Player (Golden Glove) at his high school.
"Tyler is a talented young athlete who has developed his potential as a player during the past year," said Esmay. "With the losses of Adam Castleton and Brett Baldwin in the middle, we are excited to see if Tyler can contribute right away for us."
