SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes dropped game one of their three-game series to the Cougars, 19-4, on Thursday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. The loss drops Utah to 12-13 in conference games, 28-23 overall. Brigham Young improves to 22-25-1 overall, 13-11 in the Mountain West Conference. More importantly, the Cougars extend their second-place lead over Utah to one and a half games.
BYU marked up the scoreboard first after Dave Jensen's sacrifice fly scored Doug Jackson, who had singled, stoled second and advanced on an error earlier in the inning, 1-0. The Utes followed the Cougars score in the top of the inning with two of their own. Matt Ciaramella started the Utes off with a single and then eventually advanced to second on a failed pick off attempt. Ciaramella went on to score off Nate Weese's triple off the center-field wall, 1-1. Weese then scored on a sac fly by Brit Pannier to give the Utes a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars threatened again in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and no outs, catcher Lars Birkeland lined to the center fielder Ciaramella, who then threw to the second baseman Adam Castleton to double off Ranger Wiens. Castleton then threw to the catcher Donald Hawes to tag out Rob Itri for the rare triple play. The triple play meant the only inning BYU would go scoreless, as they went on to put digits up in every inning after.
In the third, BYU added four more runs to chase off Utah starter Cheyenne Rushton and build a 5-2 margin. Itri led the Cougs' offense in the fourth with a single up the middle to score two. Utah cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the inning when Mike Basham singled in Weese.
The fourth proved productive again for the Cougars, as they used a pair of RBI singles and an RBI double to make it an 8-3 game. Utah posted its final run in the latter of the inning after Pannier doubled in Ciaramella. The double ties Pannier with teammate Adam Castleton and former Ute Casey Child for the career doubles record with 56. With a 13-4 lead, BYU saved its biggest inning for last, posting six runs in the ninth to make it a 19-4 victory.
For Utah, Rushton falls to 7-5 on the season after allowing eight runs (seven earned) off 10 hits in 3.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. Jeff Mousser earns the victory for BYU to improve to 8-4 on the season. Mousser also scattered 10 hits, but only gave up the four runs while striking out three. Utah stranded 13 runners in the game and the Cougars stranded nine.
Offensively, Ciaramella and Weese connected on 3-of-4 chances for Utah. Pannier knocked in two off a double and sac fly. Ranger Wiens smacked two home runs and a single for BYU. Jackson and Birkeland also had three hits each for the Cougs.
