SALT LAKE CITY--After giving up 19 runs to the Cougars in game one, Utah redeemed itself by scoring 19 of its own in game two to defeat BYU, 19-6 on Friday. The win evens the series, which will be decided in the rubber game on Saturday at noon at Franklin Covey Field. Utah (29-23, 13-13) will honor its seven seniors before the first pitch.
The Utes did what they've struggled to do of late, by posting more than one multiple run inning. They started the scoring attack with three in the first and then followed up with five in the second to make it an 8-1 lead early. In the first, Matt Ciaramella started things off with a lead-off single and advanced to third on a double by Donnie Saba. Next, Ciaramella scored on a sac fly by Nate Weese. It was then Saba's turn to cross the plate after Brit Pannier launched a monstrous home run over the right field wall, 3-0. In the second, Weese ripped a two-run single and went on the score on another two-run single by teammate Adam Castleton. The Utes notched their final run after Mike Westfall doubled in Castleton, 8-1. In the Utah fourth, no runs were posted but history was made as Pannier knocked his 57th career double to break the school record of 56.
With a 9-1 deficit, BYU fought back with five of its own in the fifth. The Cougars used six singles to score the five runs, led by Cameron Coughlan's two-run shot through the middle, 9-6. In the sixth, a Cougar error allowed Brett Baldwin to reach base, as he went on to score off a groundout by Weese to make the Utes' score double the Cougs, 10-5.
In the sixth, Utah produced another handful of runs. All five Ute runs, including two from a two-run dinger by Saba, were unearned because of a an earlier BYU error. The Utah eighth proved to be another big one. Ciaramella ripped his second double of the game to score Donald Hawes, who had singled earlier in the inning, for the first run. Baldwin, who had walked earlier, scored on a single by Saba. Then Ciaramella crossed home on a double-play ball by Pannier. The final run came when Castleton singled in Saba, 19-6.
Utah's two lead-off batters, Ciaramella and Saba, accounted for 10 of the Utes' 20 hits while going a perfect 5-of-5 at the plate. Ciaramella connected for two doubles and three singles, while scoring five runs and knocking in three. Saba smashed a home run, double and three singles to score four, while crossing the plate four times himself. Weese also knocked in four runs off a sac fly, ground out and single.
Ute righthander Jason Wylie picks up the win to improve to 5-7 on the year. Wylie scattered 10 hits, six of which came in the fifth, while allowing six runs and striking out five. Scott Koffman gets the loss for BYU to fall to 1-2. Koffman was chased off after only 1.2 innings, in which he gave up eight runs off seven hits.
