SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes continued to struggle with the Lobos on Friday night at Franklin Covey Field, dropping game two, 12-5. New Mexico (20-28, 8-14) has now won two in a row and five straight on the season against Utah (27-22, 11-12). The two teams conclude the series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (MT).
New Mexico started its scoring barrage in the top of the first knocking four of its 21 hits, including a two-run double by Todd Stroud, to build a 3-0 lead. Utah opened the bottom of the inning with back-to-back doubles by Matt Ciaramella and Donnie Saba, 3-1. After knocking in Ciaramella with his double, Saba scored on another double by teammate Brit Pannier, 3-2. Utah evened the score at 3-3 when Pannier scored on a New Mexico error, and took a 4-3 lead when Mike Westfall singled in Adam Castleton.
The Lobos regained the lead in the third with a pair of runs and then added to it with another three runs in the fourth, 8-4. In the fourth, Stroud was the heartbreaker again after connecting for a two-run homer. The Lobos padded their lead with another digit in the fifth and eighth, 10-5. The run in the eighth came off a solo home run by league-leader Chris Alexander (14). The Lobos scored two more in the ninth to make it a 12- 4 margin. Utah scored its last run in the final inning after Nate Weese, who had walked to lead off the inning, scored on a single by Westfall.
For the second straight day, a Lobo pitcher went the distance against Utah to pick up the win. Matt Bullen (2-5) scattered 13 hits and allowed five runs (four earned), while stranding 11 and striking out seven. Cheyenne Rushton is credited with the loss to drop him to 7-4 on the season. The senior allowed eight runs off 12 hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Westfall finished the day 3-of-5 at the plate, while knocking in two runs to lead the Utes. Pannier smacked a single and a double in the loss with an RBI and one run scored. Donald Hawes and Ciaramella each connected for two hits.
For New Mexico, Alexander was 4-of-6 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored. Stroud knocked in four runs on a 2-of-5 effort. Matt Young was perfect in the win, going 4-of-4 at the plate.
