SALT LAKE CITY--Utah prevented a New Mexico sweep, and ended its three game losing skid, by beating the Lobos, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. The win bumps the Utes to 12-12 in league play, 28-22 overall. New Mexico falls to 9-15 in conference games, 20-29 overall.
Ute righthander Mitch Maio threw another great game on the mound and redeemed himself against the only team to beat him this season. The senior held New Mexico, which has the fourth-best batting average in Division I (.343), scoreless in the complete-game effort. Maio struck out seven Lobos and yielded just two walks to earn his league-best eighth win. "I had a lot to prove since the last time I faced them," said Maio. "I was mixing my pitches well and that's what did it for me, plus our offense did a great job today."
The Utes scored single runs in the third, fourth and eighth innings to build the 3-0 victory. Donnie Saba was the first Ute run after doubling, advancing to third on a balk, and then scoring on an infield groundout by Brett Baldwin, 1-0. Utah added its second run when Mike Westfall hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Nate Weese, who had singled and advanced to third on another single earlier in the inning, 2-0. Weese scored the Utes final run after hitting his 13th long ball of the season. The home run ties him with Casey Child for the Ute career record of 46.
"We scored runs when we needed to today," said head coach Tim Esmay. "New Mexico doesn't strikeout very much, so Mitch getting seven against them is a big help."
