Utes Drop Game One To New Mexico, 10-1

SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes dropped their fourth straight game to New Mexico, by losing game one of their home series, 10-1. Utah connected for 10 hits in the game, but could only manage the one run while stranding eight base runners. The loss drops the Utes to 27-21 overall, 11-11 in league play. New Mexico improves to 19-28 overall, 8-14 in conference games.
Utah scored its only run in the bottom of the first after Nate Weese smoked one over the right field wall for his 12th homer of the season, 1-0. The home run moves Weese within one of the all-time Ute home run record of 46.
It was all New Mexico from the second inning on. The Lobos scored first in the top of the inning after Josh Mader hit an RBI single, 1-1. New Mexico scored three more on Utah in the sixth, with two of the runs coming from another Mader single, 4-1. The Lobos built on the lead by adding one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and three more in the ninth to make it a 10-1 victory.
James Vermilyea threw a complete game for the Lobos, while scattering 10 hits and allowing the home run. Vermilyea improves to 6-7 after earning the win. Jason Wylie picks up the loss for Utah to drop him to 4-7 on the year. Wylie allowed four runs off seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Weese led the Utes with the home run and also knocked a single. Brett Baldwin and Brit Pannier each knocked two hits.
