Utes Take Series From Cougars With 11-6 Win

SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes won their series against BYU (2-1) with an 11-6 game three victory on Saturday. The win marks the Utes' 30th of the season, which is the most in five years for the ballclub. Utah (30-23, 14-13) also moves one full game ahead of the Cougars (22-27, 13-13) in the conference standings.
It was only perfect that on senior day, it would be the seniors that came through in a big way to lead Utah past BYU. The Utes kicked things off with a run in the bottom of the second when Brit Pannier, who had led off the inning with a double, scored on a sac fly by Adam Castleton, 1-0. The lead was cut short, as the Cougars knocked in three of their own in the third, 3-1. Two of the runs came off a shot over the right field wall by Rob Itri.
Utah tied the game at three all in the fourth after Nate Weese homered to right field and Castleton scored on a sac fly by Jake Jordison. The homer by Weese broke the school career record of 46. In a game full of long balls, the Cougs regained the lead in the sixth when Chris Jackson smacked a two-run shot over the right field wall, 5-3.
The Utes had an answer again as Castleton knocked one out for Utah to cut it to a 5-4 margin. After the next two batters were retired, Mike Westfall stretched what looked to be a two-out single into a double. Westfall would then score on a single by Jordison to tie the game at five apiece. Jordison went on the score the go ahead run after Donald Hawes connected for a triple to centerfield.
In the seventh, Utah added three insurance runs. The switch hitter Ciaramella turned over to the right side because of a new pitcher and knocked a triple to lead off the inning. Ciaramella then walked home after Donnie Saba smashed a home run to right center, 8-5. Next up, Weese connected for his second dinger of the game to give the Utes a 9-5 advantage.
The Utes scored their final two runs in the eighth to secure a victory. The first run came off another long ball, this time by Jordison. The second digit came when Hawes, who had walked earlier in the inning, scored on a double by Ciaramella--this time from the left side. The Cougs added one more run in the ninth, but couldn't overpower Utah's closer Jared Snyder to make it an 11-6 final.
Senior Mitch Maio picks up his league-leading ninth win of the season. Maio scattered 10 hits in 6.0 innings, while allowing five runs and striking out five. Snyder snags his fifth save of the season after throwing 1.2 innings in relief. Paul Jacinto earns the loss for BYU to fall to 2-3 on the season.
Every Ute starter had at least one hit in the win. Weese and Castleton finished with two apiece and added two RBI each. Jordison knocked in three runs on a sac fly, single and home run.
"It was really good to beat BYU two out of three games," said Nate Weese. "This helps our team get hot for our final series and the MWC tournament. I put it in the back of my mind, but it is nice to accomplish something like the home run record."
