SAN DIEGO--The Utes grabbed game one of their three-game conference series against the Aztecs, 14-9 on Saturday afternoon. The win bumps the Utes to 10-9 in league play, 26-19 overall. Meanwhile, San Diego State falls to 15-4 in Mountain West Conference Games and 33-15 overall.
In a game that was expected to be low scoring and a defensive duel, everything proved otherwise. Utah scored 14 runs off 18 hits, but committed two errors defensively. San Diego State drove in nine runs off 12 hits, but also committed a pair of errors in the game.
The Aztecs began the scoring barrage, and appeared to be sailing to an easy victory after taking a 7-0 lead after just three innings. But the Utes started to chip away in the fourth when Adam Castleton ripped a two-run homer to make it a 7-2 score. San Diego State added another run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, 8-2. Utah tied the game in the fifth, using six runs off six hits, 8-8. The Aztecs punched a run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, but for the last time, 9-8.
The Utes took their first lead of the game in the sixth. Matt Ciaramella started the inning off by tripling, and then went on to score on a single by Nate Weese. Donnie Saba, who had reached earlier in the inning on a walk, went on to score after stealing second, advancing to third on Weese's single and then crossing the plate off an error, 10-9. In the eighth, Utah notched three more insurance runs to build a 13-9 margin. Ciaramella continued his extra base play by leading off the inning with a double. He then would score off a single by Brit Pannier. Mike Westfall and Mike Basham also knocked RBI singles in the inning for the Utes. In the ninth, Ciaramella was once again the scoring benifactor of an Weese single to push it to a 14-9 final.
For Utah, Ryan Reisbeck picks up the win to improve to 3-0 on the season after throwing 2.1 innings in relief. Jason Wylie started the game for Utah, but was taken out after giving up seven runs (five earned) in 2.2 innings of work.
Offensively, Weese was 4-of-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Castleton finished 3-of-4 on the day with three runs scored and three runs driven in. Ciaramella posted his second game that was just one hit shy of the cycle. The freshman knocked a single, double and triple in a 3-of-5 effort.
