Utes Swipe Game Two From Aztecs To Win Series

SAN DIEGO--The second game of Utah's series against San Diego State proved to be the opposite of the first, but the outcome was the same as the Utes picked up their second victory over the Aztecs in the same day, 2-1. The game featured two outstanding performances on the mound by each team's pitcher. The win gives Utah its first double conference series win of a team for the year and moves the Utes into second place in the conference with an 11-9 record, 27-19 overall. The Utes took two-of-three from the first-place Aztecs (15-5, 33-16) earlier in the season for the first series win, and are the only team to beat them multiple times. The rubber game of this final series between the two will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PT) at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Cheyenne Rushton started on the mound for Utah, and threw one of his best games to date to improve his record to 7-3. The senior righthander scattered five hits in 8.0 innings of work, while striking out seven batters. The only flaw to the performance was in the bottom of the sixth when Carlo Cota smacked a lead-off double and went on to score on a sac fly to tie the game at, 1-1. But Rushton went on to retire six straight Aztecs before being relieved in the ninth. The Utes used a strategy they haven't in awhile by bringing in Sunday starter Mitch Maio to close the game and earn his fourth save of the season. Rory Shortell (7-3) held Utah to just four hits, but gave up the two runs to get the loss.
At the plate, Utah jumped out to a 1-0 lead in second when Brit Pannier, who had walked to lead off the inning, scored on a fielder's choice by Jared Snyder. Pannier helped the Utes again in the ninth by smacking a single to drive home the game winning run, 2-1.
