SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team scored 10 runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 15-4 win over Air Force (18-20, 5-10 MWC) on Sunday. The win capped off a three-game sweep of the Falcons, giving the Utes a 24-17 overall record and an 8-7 mark in conference play.
Mitch Maio started on the hill for Utah. Maio struck out the side in the first and proceeded to fan two more batters in the second. Jake Jordison put the Utes on the board in the second by driving in Brit Pannier with a single. Mike Basham scored off of a Donald Hawes sacrifice to give Utah a 2-0 advantage after two.
After holding the Falcons hitless for three, Maio gave up three hits in the fourth inning, as Air Force scored two runs to tie the game. A Matt Ciaramella double down the left field line scored Brett Baldwin in the fifth to put the Utes back on top. Air Force retaliated in the top of the sixth, by scoring a run to bring the game to 3-3, but the Utes added two more runs in the sixth to maintain the lead.
The Utes, who scored eight runs in the eighth inning of Friday's game one to overcome an 8-3 deficit, turned on their bats in again in the eighth to score 10 runs and pull out the victory.
The Utes lead off the eighth with back-to-back dingers by Brandon Biesenger and Basham. It was the first homerun of the season for both. Donnie Saba doubled to right center to drive in two more runs after the first five batters of the inning reached base. Brit Pannier's double scored Saba and Baldwin as the Utes cruised to a eight-hit, 10-run inning.
Maio earned the win in eight innings of work, allowing seven hits, four runs and striking out six to improve to 6-1 on the season. Erik Fisher fell to 2-4 for the Falcons in the loss.
Basham finished the game 3-of-5 (2B, HR), with three RBI and four runs. Pannier scored two runs on 2-of-5 at the plate (2B) with two RBI. Baldwin was 2-of-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBI.
The Utes will be back in action Apr. 19-21 when they host UNLV in a three-game series.
