Utes Fall To Rebels In Game One Of Series

SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes dropped game one of their three-game series to UNLV, 7-2 on Sunday night at Franklin Covey Field. Utah (24-18, 8-8) and the Rebels (20-21, 6-10) waited through two days of rain and snow before opening their series. The two teams wrap things up tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The game seemed to be in the Rebels' control from the beginning. They knocked in the first two runs of the game in the third off an RBI double and single, and then added another run in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead. Utah posted a solo run after Donald Hawes ripped his seventh homer of the season over the left field wall, 3-1. But the Rebels broke open the game by adding four insurance runs in the eighth to build a 7-1 margin. Brent Johnson's home run to right field accounted for two of the Rebels' runs that inning. Utah tried to rally in the final inning by getting the lead runner, Adam Castleton, on with a walk. Castleton eventually scored on a single to center by Matt Ciaramella, but it was too little too late for the Utes.
Hawes finished the night as the only Ute with more than one hit. The senior catcher went 3-of-4 at the plate with a stolen base. Jason Wylie drops to 4-6 on the season after allowing five runs in 7.0 innings of work. Robbie Van improves to 4-5 with the win.
