Utes Swipe Game Three From Aztecs To Win Series

SALT LAKE CITY--The Utes used a great pitching performance from Mitch Maio to swipe game three from the Aztecs, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. Utah (18-13, 4-5 MWC) wins the series, 2-1, over San Diego State (22-11, 5-3 MWC).
Coming off its worst offensive performance of the season, Saturday's loss, the Utes came roaring back to win the rubber game and take the conference series against the Aztecs, 2-1. Leading Utah was right hander Mitch Maio, who tied his career high of 11 strikeouts for the second time this season. Maio threw his third complete game of the season, and allowed just one run and one walk in the effort. The senior improves to 5-1 on the season.
At the plate, Mike Westfall put Utah up, 1-0 after crushing a ball over the left field wall in the fourth inning. That same inning, Brett Baldwin ripped an RBI single to score Mike Basham and give the Utes a 2-0 lead. The two runs were all Maio needed as the Aztecs couldn't come up with an answer for the senior's pitches, trailing nearly every count. San Diego State did manage a run in the fifth after Brian Manfred doubled home Riley Embry to make it a 2-1 game. The Utes added an insurance run in the eighth when Brit Pannier, who had doubled to lead off the inning, scored on a wild pitch by reliever Royce Ring.
Matt Ciaramella finished the day 3-of-4 at the plate with two stolen bases, and Mike Basham and Jared Snyder added two hits for Utah. Mike Moat gets the loss for the Aztecs, dropping him to 3-2 on the year.
Utah puts its 6-1 home record to the test on Tuesday afternoon in a double header against Albertson College. After that, the Utes travel to Provo, Utah to face Brigham Young in a three-game conference series starting on Thursday.
