ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--The Utes dropped their conference opener to New Mexico, 13-9, at Lobo Field on Friday. The loss drops Utah to 12-9, 0-1 MWC on the season and moves the Lobos to 11-12, 1-0 MWC. The two teams play game two on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (MT).
Utah dug itself into a hole early in game after the Lobos scored three runs in the first and one run in the second (4-1). The Utes brought in one run in the third to cut the lead in half, but New Mexico wasn't done. The Lobos scored three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more in the sixth to jump to a 9-2 lead.
The Utes didn't give up, scoring two in the seventh, three in the eight and two more in the ninth. But, it wasn't enough as Utah fell short, 13-9.
Nate Weese, Utah's new career hits leader (233), improved his hitting streak to 16 games after going 2-of-4 at the plate, including a home run and a double. Weese knocked in three runs while scoring two. The senior also tied the career at bats record (726) with four in the game. Donald Hawes also hit well for Utah. The senior catcher went 2-of-4 with 2 RBI.
For the Lobos, Troy Cairns improved his league-best hit total to 42 and Cory Alexander boosted his league-high home run total to 10. Cairns and Alexander both finished the night with three RBI.
Jason Wylie (3-3) picks up his third loss of the season. Wylie allowed six runs in 3.0 innings. James Vermilyea (5-2) grabs his conference-best fifth win of the season. Vermilyea threw 8.0 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned).
