OREM, Utah--Eight Utes posted multiple hits in the game and four Utes posted three RBI or more as Utah defeated Southern Utah, 22-1. Utah (12-8) bested its earlier game against the T-Birds by driving in 22 runs off 24 hits. Ute totals for the two games against SUU equalled 38 runs off 44 hits.
The Utes began their scoring attack in the bottom of the first when Mike Basham tripled to score Adam Castleton, who had also tripled to lead off the game. Utah added another run after Basham scored on a groundout by Nate Weese. Southern Utah scored its only run of the game in the top of the second to cut the lead to, 2-1. With a 5-1 Ute lead after two innings, Utah knocked in six runs in the third and fourth to make it a double digit margin (17-1). In the third, Jake Jordison began the offensive outpour with a two-run shot over the left center wall. In the fourth, Weese knocked out his second of the day and Jordison pounded out his second homer of the game to lead the Utes' six runs.
Utah added another run in the fifth and a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth to make it a 22-1 game. Basham hit RBI singles in the seventh and eighth to lead Utah.
Basham was a perfect 6-of-6 in the game for Utah. The junior knocked in four RBI and scored four runs. Weese and Jordison drove in five runs each and scored two a piece. Castleton also had four hits and three RBI for Utah.
Cheyenne Rushton continued to give SUU trouble. Rushton picked up his third win of the season, two of which have come at the T-Birds expense. Rushton threw 5.0 innings and gave up one run while striking out eight.
