OREM, Utah-Utah switched a few things around because of the weekend storm and played its home series opener against Southern Utah at Utah Valley State College's field on Sunday afternoon. The Utes pounded out 16 runs off 20 hits to defeat the Thunderbirds, 16-7. The win moves Utah to 11-8 on the season and drops SUU to 1-18.
Southern Utah started things off by scoring one run in the top of the first, but Utah answered with two of its own in the bottom of the inning (2-1). The Thunderbirds used a four-run second and a two-run third to jump out to a 7-1 lead. The Utes cut the lead to 7-2 after three innings.
The Utes scored four runs in the fourth after RBI singles by Donald Hawes, Adam Castleton and Brett Baldwin, along with a home run by Nate Weese (7-6). Utah took the lead (8-7) in the fifth after Donald Hawes homored to left center.
The Utah bats banged out seven hits to drive in seven runs in the eighth. Castleton knocked out a two-run shot and Mike Westfall knocked out a three-run dinger to lead the Ute attack.
For the game, the Utes were led by Castleton, Hawes and Westfall with three RBI each. Nate Weese knocked in two runs, while scoring three off 4-of-5 hitting. Ryan Reisbeck (2-0) picks up his second win of the season after throwing six scoreless innings. Jason Wylie started the game for Utah, but was relieved after allowing seven runs in 3.0 innings.
