No. 24 Utah Volleyball Team Upsets No. 12 Arizona

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 24 University of Utah women's volleyball team upset No. 12 Arizona 3-1 (20-30, 31-29, 30-18, 30-17) for Senior Night at Crimson Court tonight. The Utes hit for a season-high .385 and held the Wildcats to .169. Utah also out-blocked Arizona 13.5-9.
In game one, Arizona led throughout, building its lead to as many as nine points before the Utes cut it to five. The Wildcats stopped the Utah rally, however, pulling away and winning by 10. Utah hit for .300 on the game, compared to the amazing .452 hitting percentage of the Wildcats. Senior Sylva Strzinkova, one of the Utes' two seniors, had four kills to lead Utah. Sophomore Kelsie Kartchner had two service aces on the game.
Arizona took an early lead in game two, but Utah went on a 5-0 run to tie it at 11. The game remained close for the remainder with the Utes scoring the final two points for the 31-29 win. Junior Kim Turner and sophomore Sabine Schulz each had five kills to lead Utah, which hit for .350 on the game as a team. Kartchner again had two service aces on the game.
After a tie at six points, the Utes took the lead for good in game three, at one point going on a 5-1 run and winning by 12 points. Utah held the Wildcats to just .083 hitting and hit for .583. The Utes also dominated the net, out-blocking Arizona 4.5-1. Sophomore Lyndsey Phillips led Utah with four kills, while junior libero Jackie Morrill had five digs on the game.
Game four belonged to the Utes, which with the exception of an early one-point deficit, led for the entire game. Utah hit for .357 on the game and held the Wildcats to -.068. Kartchner hit for a perfect 1.000 on the game with three kills, eight assists and five digs to lead the Utes.
"We didn't stop them at all in game one," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "But we made some adjustments and started playing good volleyball. This was our best offensive match of the season. It was a steady building of momentum. We took things away from them and our offense got better as the night went on."
Turner led three Utes in double figures in kills with 14. She also had seven blocks on the night. Strzinkov? notched 12 kills, nine digs and four blocks, while Schulz finished with a double-double -- 11 kills and 11 digs. Senior Brenda Beal finished with eight kills, eight digs and seven blocks, while Morrill had a team-high 13 digs. Kartchner dished out 50 assists on the night to go along with eight digs, four kills, four service aces and two blocks.

Utah, which is guaranteed a berth in the NCAA Tournament, will find out its next opponent during the NCAA Selection Show at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.
