No. 21 Utah Volleyball Team Defeats Wyoming 3-1

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 21 University of Utah women's volleyball team avenged its Friday loss to Colorado State by defeating the University of Wyoming 3-1 (30-16, 27-30, 30-19, 30-26) at Crimson Court tonight. The Utes hit for .276 on the night and held Wyoming to just .045. Utah also out-blocked the Cowgirls 15-9.5. With the win, the Utes improve to 21-7 overall and 10-4 in the Mountain West Conference heading into the MWC Tournament.
"We played with a lot more confidence tonight," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "I told the girls at practice this morning that there's really nothing we could do about last night. I think we responded well to the loss."
Utah owned game one, leading throughout and winning by 14 points. The Utes hit for .433 on the game and held the Cowgirls to -.107. Junior Kim Turner paced Utah with five kills, while senior Brenda Beal and sophomore Sabine Schulz notched four kills apiece and hit for 1.000. Turner and sophomore Lyndsey Phillips also had four blocks each.
Game two saw five ties in the first seven points before the Cowgirls pulled away. Utah trailed by as many as eight points (12-20) but tied the game at 25. Wyoming then used a 5-2 run to win the game. Utah's four service errors on the game proved to be the difference, as the Utes out-hit the Cowgirls .325 to .293. Senior captain Sylva Strzinkova had eight kills on the game, while libero Jackie Morrill finished with six digs.
The Utes regrouped in game three, again holding the lead for the entire game. Utah built an eight-point lead early on, but Wyoming cut it to as little as three (15-12). The Utes then went on an 8-0 run and led by as many as 12 before winning 30-19. Utah hit for .270 on the game, compared to the -.048 of the Cowgirls.
In the fourth and final game, Utah built a comfortable lead early on, but Wyoming battled back to tie the game at 14 and took their first and only lead at 17-16. There were three more ties before the Utes pulled away for good, winning by four points. Strzinkov? had six kills on the game to lead Utah.
Strzinkov? led four Utes with double figure in kills with 17. Turner notched 15, Schulz 13 and Phillips 11. Strzinkov? also had 13 digs for her 13th double-double of the season, while Phillips had 10 blocks to mark her first career double-double. Junior libero Jackie Morrill had a career-high 21 digs and sophomore setter Kelsie Kartchner dished out 55 assists on the match.

The Utes travel to Fort Collins, Colo. next Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 21-23, to participate in the Mountain West Conference Tournament at Colorado State.
