SALT LAKE CITY--The University of Utah baseball team has signed right-handed pitcher Clay Westmoreland, right-handed pitcher Brady Martinez and first baseman/designated hitter Jake Jordison. Head Coach Tim Esmay foresees the three players filling the voids created after pitchers Travis Palmer and Ryan Bailey, and first baseman Chris Shelton elected to sign professional contracts and forego their final season of college baseball.
Westmoreland comes to the Utes from Mesa Mt. View High School in Arizona, where he was named to the all-state second team. "We're excited to have a young pitcher of Clay's caliber. He throws in the upper 80s and low 90s and is a bulldog on the mound. Clay will contribute tremendously as a freshman," says Esmay.
Martinez was named the 2001 Utah 3A player of the year after leading Carbon High School to a near-perfect season and the state championship. "Brady was by far one of the best high school pitchers in the state last season. He throws in the low 90s and we're excited to have him join our program. He'll have an immediate impact on the mound as a freshman," states Esmay.
The Dixie State College transfer Jordison was named a first team Junior College All-American. "Jake was the best hitter at the JC level last year. We're thrilled to have him step in and fill Chris Shelton's shoes," boasts Esmay. Jordison played at Hillcrest High School before attending Dixie State College.
