SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH. - The University of Utah baseball team improved to 24-25 overall and 12-14 in the Mountain West Conference with their 13-3 win over San Diego State on Friday at Franklin Covey Field. After falling to the Aztecs on Thursday, the Utes evened the series with the victory. The two teams will face off again Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Jason Wylie earned the win for the Utes, allowing only five hits and two runs in seven innings of work. Wylie struck out six and walked two. Sean Overholt finished the game off for the Utes, pitching the eighth and ninth and allowing one run.
The Utah bats were off to a hot start after Donnie Saba singled to start the game. Adam Castleton followed with a single to put two runners on base for Nate Weese, who cleared the bases with a three-run blast to give Utah the early advantage.
Brit Pannier drove in three more runs with a double in the third inning. San Diego committed two errors in the third, as Utah scored seven runs on four hits. Saba smashed a homerun to lead off the sixth inning to give the Utes an 11-0 lead.
Wylie pitched six shut-out innings, then gave up two runs in the seventh. Tommy Maestas homered in the bottom of the seventh to extend Utah's lead. San Diego scored a single run in the eighth, but was unable to uncover the deficit, falling to the Utes, 13-3.
Saba finished the game with a 3-for-4 performance, and Weese drove in four RBI's on two hits for the Utes. SDSU pitcher, Mike Moat, gave up 13 runs on 10 hits in six and two-thirds innings.
After finishing the series tomorrow, Utah will wrap up the season at home against New Mexico, May 10-12.
