Palo Alto, Calif. - The University of Utah volleyball team ended the season tonight with a 3-1 (30-17, 30-17, 28-30, 30-19) loss to Stanford University in the NCAA Regional Tournament at Maples Pavilion. The Utes finish the season with a 25-7 overall record. Stanford (30-2) will advance to face Texas A&M in the regional final on Sat., Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
The Utes got off to a slow start and dropped the first two matches 30-17, 30-17. Utah came back after the break and won game three, 30-28, getting Stanford out of system with smart hitting and blocking. The Utes could not sustain the win against a very powerful Stanford team and lost game four 30-19.
"Stanford is a very good team," said head coach Beth Launiere. "We've faced the jump serve a lot this season, but I think it threw us off facing three jump servers tonight. We just couldn't sustain it and they went on to win."
For Utah, junior Sylva Strzinkova notched a double-double (12 kills and 13 digs) for a .235 hitting percentage. Senior McKelle Stilson totaled 11 kills and hit for .226 on the night. Stilson also added six total blocks in the match. Senior Alisa Geddes added 10 kills and six digs in the effort. Jackie Morrill and Kelsie Kartchner combined for 45 assists, respectively. As a team, Utah hit for .164 in the match.
USA Olympian Logan Tom dominated the match for the Cardinal. She racked up 26 kills for a .404 hitting percentage and 16 digs. Teammate Tara Conrad totaled 15 kills and hit for .591, while Ogonna Nnamani notched 15 kills for a .458 hitting percentage. Robyn Lewis posted 57 assists in the match. Stanford hit for .366 as a team and out-blocked the Utes 13-10.
"We didn't play our best tonight," said Launiere. "We played pretty good in game three and I was proud of the way the kids came back, but Stanford played very well. Getting here was a step and we felt like we could win this match. We fought hard and I am proud of our effort and this team."
