SALT LAKE CITY-The Utah baseball program has signed Matt Anderson (Utah), Brandon Bailey (Colo.), Derek Larsen (Utah) and Nathan Shierholtz (Calif.). The four players are expected to join the Utes next season.
Head Coach Tim Esmay believes this recruiting class possesses a lot of talent. "This makes two years in a row that we feel our recruiting class will have a major effect on the success of our program," says Esmay.
Outfielder Matt Anderson will join the Utes from Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah. "Matt is by far the best high school outfielder in the state of Utah this season," says Esmay. "He will help fill the void left by our outfielders graduating in 2002."
Brandon Bailey, a right handed pitcher, comes to Utah from Fort Collins High School in Fort Collins, Colo. "Brandon possesses a fastball with speed in the upper 80s and he has an excellent breaking ball," states Esmay. "He should have an immediate impact for us on the mound as a freshman."
Right handed pitcher Derek Larsen is from Spanish Fork High School in Spanish Fork, Utah. "If you combine Derek's pitches with his makeup, then you have the best high school right hander in Utah on the mound," says Esmay.
Nathan Shierholtz, from San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif., can play either the outfield positions or at the infield corners. "The coaching staff feels with his left handed swing, Nathan should have a terrific career at Utah beginning his freshman season," states Esmay.
