COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Utah baseball team (15-21, 6-9 MWC) scored 10 runs in the last three innings to break open a 6-4 ball game and take two of three games from Air Force (17-18, 3-9 MWC), winning this one 16-4.
Utah got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning on three consecutive RBI singles by Nate Weese, Mike Goff, and Jed Chrisman. Rob Stuart hit a run scoring triple and scored on a single by Donnie Saba to spot the Utes a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, where the Falcons posted two runs. Air Force put up a run in each of the next two innings, but only up 6-4, Utah buried the hatchet.
In the seventh, Adam Castleton walked to lead off the inning and advanced on a bunt hit down third base line by Sam Swenson. Weese drove them in with a triple to right. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Goff. Chrisman then crushed a solo home run to left. Brit Pannier and Stuart reached on consecutive singles, and Pannier scored on a wild pitch to conclude the five run rally. The Utes scored one in the eight. Weese doubled and scored on a single by Goff.
The Utes poured it on in the ninth with four more runs. Saba and Castleton laced RBI singles and Swenson drove in two runs with a double.
Three Ute pitchers held Air Force bats at bay. Brett Lindsey picked up the win on the mound throwing three-and-one-third innings of relief, striking out four and walking no Falcon batters. Brandon Page started on the hill and threw four-and-two-thirds with four strikeouts and two earned runs. Mitch Maio closed out the game with two strike outs in the final frame.
Weese led a 21 hit afternoon going 4-for-6 with three RBI's. Stuart and Chrisman each went 3-for-5 and had two RBI's, while Swenson also rapped out three hits. Goff, Saba, and Pannier each had two hits, while Donald Hawes and Castleton had one safety each.
Utah hosts Southern Utah at Franklin Covey Field Tuesday in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
