SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball swept Mesa State in a double header today. The Utes trampled the Mavericks 12-1 and pulled out a come-from-behind victory 7-6. The wins bring Utah's season record to 13-14, the Utes are 4-2 in Mountain West Conference play.
In the first game, Utah scored 12 runs on 12 hits with one error while shutting down Mesa State with only one run on seven hits. Sophomore Nate Weese highlighted for Utah hitting a double, a triple and a home run. The first baseman also stole his fourth base of the season. Weese was 3-for-3 in the game scoring three runs and three RBI. Second baseman Adam Castleton also hit 3-for-3, slamming a double, a home run and stealing a base.
Benson Barrera earned the win for the Utes. The hurler pitched six of seven innings facing 26 batters. He allowed six hits, one run and struck out four batters. Barrera is 1-1 on the season with a 5.23 ERA.
In the second game, Mesa State jumped to an early lead scoring three runs in the first two innings. The Mavericks continued to lead the game up to the bottom of the seventh inning when Utah tied the score at 6-6 to head into extra innings. The Utes sealed the victory scoring one run in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Donnie Saba reached base on an error by the pitcher, Brit Pannier was hit by a pitch and a sacrifice bunt by junior Sam Swenson rounded Saba into scoring position. Mike Goff claimed the Ute victory hitting a sacrifice fly to score the winning run.
Goff and Swenson led the Ute batting brigade in the second game. Goff hit 2-for-4 scoring one run and three RBI. Swenson was 2-for-5 scoring two runs.
Pitcher Brett Lindsey picks up his first win of the season for a 1-0 record. The junior pitched the final two innings in Utah's victory. He faced nine batters giving up no hits and striking out three batters.
The Utes continue Mountain West Conference play in a three-game series against instate rival Brigham Young March 23-25. The games will be played in Provo, Utah.
