HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS... is in her third season as Utahs head coach. Stevens owns an 97-56 overall record and a 44-26 mark against Western Athletic Conference teams. In her first season, Stevens led Utah to the NCAA Tournament and a third-place finish in the WAC. Last year, Stevens guided a Utah team that started seven freshmen to a 36-21 overall record and a third-place finish in the WAC at 19-13. Stevens hasnt slowed down during the off-season. Last fall, she was named head coach of the USA Softball Junior National Team that will compete in the 1999 World Games in Taipei, Taiwan, June 17-27.
The former Ute player and assistant coach came home in September of 1996 following a two-year stint at the University of Massachusetts. Stevens was the associate head coach for the Minutewomen during the 1995 and 96 seasons, and was named UMass head coach in June of 96, three months prior to being hired by her alma mater. In each of her two seasons at UMass, Stevens helped the Minutewomen reach the NCAA Tournament and win the Atlantic-10 Conference regular-season and tournament championships.
Stevens began her coaching career as an assistant at Utah from 1981-84. In addition to her collegiate coaching portfolio, Stevens has been a nationally recognized pitching instructor over the past 14 years. She has also worked internationally, and was the owner of Mona Stevens Enterprises from 1989-99.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the layoff and playing this week - "I think, at first, that not being able to play the last two weekends was deflating. But, we needed the rest, and we got that rest. What is exciting now is that we have great weather, and we havent had that most of this season. Plus, were at home now. Even though we have a bunch of games in a row, I see a fire and optimism that I havent seen from this team most of season; I saw it in the fall, but not this season. I see it now. They know that they are capable of playing better than they have. They are excited to get these games in.
"I think, in one sense, that this two-week layoff has removed us a little bit from the first half of season. We didnt play badly the first half of the season, by we did not play up to our potential. We are looking forward to marathon ball. I know that were going to play a lot of games in a short period of time. But, theres a lot of days where we just play one game. We play 12 of the next 19 days, but half of those dates are single games. It shouldnt be too taxing, and itll keep us sharp. I think its a great schedule and its going to be so nice to be home. The kids are ready to play, and I hope that our fans come out and really get rowdy to support us."
On Southern Utah and Hawaii - "You can never just waltz into a game with Southern Utah. They always come after us, and we always have to play well to beat them. They will make plays to stay right with you. They love to beat us. Im glad that we have them on Wednesday. With Hawaii coming in for the weekend, well have a chance to get our first home games in before we play them. Hawaii is the No. 2-ranked team in the region, and as always their strength of schedule is good. Theyre not as strong as they were last year, but they still have the same pitchers as last year. We will have to play well to beat them, but we are excited to play someone of Hawaiis caliber."
