SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team dropped the first game of a three game set against the visiting Fresno State Bulldogs, 14-6, at Franklin Covey Field on Friday night. The Utes overall record fell to 18-26, and 6-17 in Conference play, while the Bulldog's improved to 31-27, and 12-13 in the WAC.
The night air was filled with long balls, as seven home runs were smashed between the two teams. The Utes and Bulldogs shared thirteen extra base hits and a combined for 33 total hits. The offense started early for both teams. Bulldog catcher Brad Harper hit two home runs in the first three innings, driving in five runs on the night. Utah's first baseman Ryan Johnerson led the Utes by reaching base in four out of five at bats, and hitting his thirteenth home run of the season.
Utah's Brandon Page came into the evening with 4.52 era, but was pulled after an inning and a third, giving up seven earned runs on eight base hits, and a walk. The loss puts Page's record at 6-4.
Ute baseball resumes on Saturday, May 8, as they face Fresno State for the second game of the weekend series. The game will be played at Franklin Covey field, at 1:00 MDT.
