The First Pitch: Things to Know
- The Utah baseball team heads out for its final road trip of the regular season, sending the Utes to TCU for a three-game series at Lupton Stadium.
- Utah is coming off a 9-5 victory over Utah Valley on Tuesday and took two of three in the team's rivalry series on the road at BYU last weekend.
- The Big 12 standings currently have Utah (11-13) in a tie with Baylor for ninth place. The top 12 teams in the final standings will clinch a spot for the conference tournament in Surprise, Arizona, later this month.
- TCU won the rubber game of last year's series at Utah, though the Utes had chances in all three contests in Salt Lake City. Though this is just the second series between the clubs as Big 12 foes, Utah and TCU previously were conference foes in the Mountain West and WAC.
- In a bit of a full-circle moment, Lupton Stadium hosted the 2009 Mountain West Tournament which Utah won with a victory over San Diego State in the championship game. Bennett Askew, now TCU's deputy athletic director, started that game on the mound for Utah.
- Utah dropped its series opener at BYU last Thursday, with momentum swinging to the Cougars during a five-run bottom of the fifth inning. But the Utes quickly put the loss behind them and bounced back for an 8-1 victory to even up the series followed by an 8-3 triumph in the rubber match.
- First baseman Cameron Gurney hit .538 in the BYU series with a double and five RBI, while never striking out in 14 total plate appearances. Gurney also had a hand in six of Utah's seven double plays, highlighting a defense that committed just one error on the weekend.
- Payton Riske tossed five innings for the win in the middle game before Kaden Soder delievered three crucial innings of relief in the rubber match at BYU.
- The team's seven double plays led the Big 12 last week and were third-most in the country (Indiana State and Oregon State were tied for the lead with eight). Overall for the season, the Utes have turned 45 twin-killings, second-most in the Big 12. In league games Utah leads the Big 12 with 31 double plays.
