SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah freshman
Cal Miller has been named Big 12 Baseball Co-Newcomer of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It is Miller's first weekly award as a member of the Utah program.
Â
A key part of the lineup in Utah's three-game sweep of Texas Tech, Miller batted .400 in the series with two home runs, including a 4-for-7 clip with runners on base. The weekend went on the books as Utah's first series sweep as a member of the Big 12 Conference.
Â
Three of Miller's five plate appearances in Friday's series opener led to a Utah run scoring, including a no-doubter with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The native of Centerville, Utah, and Viewmont HS alumnus had another two-run shot in Sunday's series finale to spark the Utes with an early lead, before drawing a bases-loaded walk to drive in what proved to be the game-deciding run. Miller himself scored twice on Saturday as Utah run-ruled the Red Raiders.
