Gomez records two hits, scores twice

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Mia Gomez recorded two hits to extend her on-base streak to 30 consecutive games, but the University of Utah softball team suffered a 7-5 defeat to the Kansas Jayhawks in Big 12 Conference action on Friday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.

The Utes are now 23-7.

Gomez led-off the game with a single, moved to second thanks to a walk, took third on a fly out, then scored on an infield hit off the bat of Shonty Passi to get the Utes on the board first.

In the second, the visitors loaded the bases with one out and a Danika Wilson walk forced in Utah's second run. Kayla Lyon followed with a two-run single to center and, after a walk and a wild pitch, Wilson scampered home to make the score 5-0.

That lead remained intact into the fifth, but that's when an Ella Boyer three-run homer brought the Jayhawks to within three. A Hailey Cripe grand slam in the sixth gave the home team the lead and they completed the comeback by shutting out Utah in the seventh.

The second of three between the Utes and Jayhawks will be played on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. MDT.
