The First Pitch: Things to Know
- The Utah baseball team embarks on the penultimate series of the Big 12 regular season schedule, heading down to Tucson, Arizona, this weekend for a three-game set against the No. 18-ranked Wildcats from Hi Corbett Field.
- The Utes' last series win over Arizona came back in 2022 in Salt Lake City; should Utah take the series this weekend it would be the first on the road against Arizona since a sweep in 2017.
- This weekend will make the Big 12 Conference the third league to host a baseball series between Utah and Arizona. The clubs shared competition in the WAC in the 1960s and '70s, before Arizona departed for what was then the Pac-8. Then from 2012-24, both teams competed in the Pac-12.
- Southpaw and eventual Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Bryson Van Sickle keyed a series-opening win for Utah last season against Arizona in Salt Lake City, tossing a complete game three-hitter. But the Wildcats evened up the series on Saturday night and brought the bats in the rubber game to seal the series.
- Utah is looking to keep the momentum going this week after an 8-2 triumph on Tuesday night against Utah Valley. Matt Flaharty hit his first home run of the season and Lucas Bosen contributed a five-inning start on the way to the win.
- Three other players had multi-hit performances while Brooks Wallace Award Watch List member Core Jackson doubled and scored twice. Jackson now has 16 doubles for the season which ranks fourth in the Big 12.
- Jackson has been a mainstay in the Utah lineup and defensively in his two seasons with the club. A .358 hitter since arriving in SLC, the senior shortstop owns a .352 batting average, 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 36 RBI and 50 runs scored—all team bests.
- Three other members of the team join Jackson in hitting over .300. Utah's collective batting average (.291) places in the top-five across the Big 12.
- As a team, Utah has tallied 100 doubles during the 2025 season to rank seventh in the Big 12. The power-speed combo has also given the Utes 13 triples—a top-three mark in the conference.
- Jackson and Friday night ace Colter McAnelly were once again included in the latest D1Baseball.com position breakdowns. Jackson was listed as the No. 10 shortstop in the country and best in the Big 12, while the sophomore right-hander McAnelly was tabbed the No. 47 starter.
- McAnelly heads into the weekend atop the Big 12 in innings pitched (78.2) and fourth in strikeouts (85). His strikeout total ties McAnelly for fifth-most in a season in Utah history; the record is owned by Jayson Rose (106 in 2016).
- Head coach Gary Henderson is just one win away from reaching 100 victories at Utah. Henderson eclipsed 400 career wins last season with a triumph over Oregon on May 22, 2024.
This Week in Utah Baseball History
May 10, 2024 – Southpaw and Utah native
Bryson Van Sickle tosses a complete game three-hitter in a 6-1 win over No. 17-ranked Arizona during a Friday matinee at Smith's Ballpark. Van Sickle had eight strikeouts in his final home start and went on to be named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year. With a Maddux performance earlier that season against Arizona State, Van Sickle is likely one of the few pitchers in history to toss a complete game in the same season against both Arizona and ASU.
