SALT LAKE CITY –
Kaylah Nelsen smacked a pair of hits and drove in a run, but the University of Utah softball team ended up on the short end of a 6-2 score against the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday night in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah is now 12-35 and 4-15 in the Big 12.
The game's first runs came courtesy of ISU in the top of the first, when a wild pitch and an RBI single by Sydney Malott gave the visitors a 2-0 edge. Despite those early hiccups, Utah's
Hailey Maestretti settled down and tossed up zeroes in each of the next three innings, including a perfect fourth.
The Utes found a way to dent home plate in the fourth, when
Shonty Passi drew a one-out walk and
Kaylah Nelsen roped an RBI double into the gap in right-center. Unfortunately for the home side, the Cyclones quickly responded with three tallies in the fifth to make the score 5-1.
Utah threatened to mount a comeback in the sixth, when back-to-back knocks from Passi and Nelsen brought up
Emily Capobianco, who bounced an RBI single through the middle to bring Utah within three. That was as close as the Utes would get, as ISU tacked on a run in the seventh before recording the day's final three outs.
