SALT LAKE CITY –
Shelbi Ortiz and
Shonty Passi both collected multiple hits, but the University of Utah softball team was handed an 18-7 defeat by the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah falls to 12-36 overall and 4-16 in the Big 12.
The Utes were the first team on the scoreboard, thanks to a lead-off single by Ortiz in the bottom of the first, a Passi sacrifice and a run-scoring safety through the middle off the bat of
Kaylah Nelsen.
The Cyclones answered with three runs in the second, but Utah responded immediately in their half of the stanza, which started with a pair of errors and a sacrifice. With two outs, Ortiz slapped a single back through the box, plating a pair and she followed that by stealing second. When Passi proceeded to dunk a hit of her own into right-center, Ortiz raced home to give the home side a 4-3 edge.
Unfortunately for the Utes, Iowa State's offense erupted for five runs in the third, three in the fourth and seven more in the fifth to make the score 18-5. The Utes scored an unearned run in the third and a bases-loaded walk to Nelsen as well as an
Emily Capobianco sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth closed out the scoring.
Ortiz finished the day with three hits in four tries, her third game in 2025 with at least three knocks, tying her for the most on the squad. Her three runs scored were also a new career-high.
