WACO, Texas –
Drake Digiorno homered for the second time this season, but it was a long ball for Baylor that proved the difference in the game as the Utah baseball team fell by a 4-3 score on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.
Starting pitcher
Merit Jones gave the Utes seven innings of three-run, walk-free ball with six strikeouts and eight hits allowed. Though Baylor jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, Jones spotted just two hits after that. The junior retired eight straight Bears to close his outing as well as 13 of his final 14 batters.
After mustering just a hit batsman through the first three innings, Utah got on the board in the fourth with three straight hits.
Tyler Quinn put a single down the left field line and
Kaden Carpenter singled in a seven-pitch at bat to put a pair of runners on base. Digiorno then turned on a 1-2 pitch for his second homer of the season—putting it down the left field line and evening the score at three.
Utah looked to pull in front with men in scoring position both in the fifth and sixth innings, though the Utes were unable to capitalize. But Jones and the defense kept the Utes right in it, turning a double play in the fifth inning to kick off a stretch of eight straight Bears retired by Jones to close his outing. The span included a nice sliding catch by Digiorno in left field.
The Bears took a 4-3 lead on an eighth-inning home run from Tyriq Kemp, on a ball that narrowly evaded a leaping
Santino Panaro at the wall.
Lucas Boesen (3-2) received the loss.
